Library
Autism is a complicated condition, and we certainly do not claim to be experts. However, we aim to be humble in our efforts to continuously ask questions, evolve our understanding, and share knowledge that is practically useful. This library is an ongoing process of research based learning; meaning we aim to pursue knowledge through independent and openminded inquiry. There are many questions we wish to explore and these will continually evolve.
There are some conflicting perspectives but we will embrace these in a positive spirit. As a starting point, we accept the concept of neurodiversity; that autism itself is a difference rather than disorder. As such, we accept the social model of disability; that many autistic people are disabled by a lack of societal adjustments. However, we accept the medical model of disability when trying to understand the various co-morbidities that can sometimes be associated with being autistic, including speech and or learning disabilities.
Our aim is to be better informed of the social, psychological, medical and legal support available. We will try to understand how these are evolving, and how we can share this with others to influence improvements. Our goal is to support, not replace relevant professional and organisational advice. Our resources will continue to evolve, so we actively seek out feedback and welcome suggestions that could contribute to the library, so please get in touch.
